This is the way to reach the Campo de Piedra Pómez (pumice field) without going around through Antofagasta de la Sierra. The road heads north from Fiambalá into the Las Papas river canyon, with several river crossings and walls shaped by erosion.

After the village of Las Papas, the route follows cliff roads with views back over the Fiambalá valley and climbs into the Puna. You can add a visit to the Los Hornos hot springs, with hot water springs and mineral formations, and pass Laguna Escondida, where different species of flamingo may be seen depending on the season.

The destination is the Campo de Piedra Pómez, a protected area of white and pink rocks carved by the wind over thousands of years from ancient eruptions linked to the Robledo volcano. The return is along the same road.

Good to know

  • The trip depends on the weather and the state of rivers and roads: in summer, rain can cut off the river crossings.
  • It's a long day with many kilometres of gravel and cliff roads.
  • Inside the Campo de Piedra Pómez, stay on the marked trails and don't take any stones.
  • Bring warm clothes, water and food for the whole day.
