National Route 60 links Fiambalá with the San Francisco Pass on the Chilean border. As it climbs, the landscape changes from the reddish gorges of the valley to the open Puna, surrounded by some of the highest volcanoes in the Andes, which give the road its name: the Route of the Seismiles (six-thousanders).
The first stops are the Valle de los Dinosaurios, the Quebrada de Las Angosturas and Pequeño Purmamarca, hills with striking shapes and colours. Higher up come Cortaderas, Las Peladas and the Incahuasi volcano viewpoint.
The tour reaches Laguna de Acuarios and Las Grutas, on the way to the border crossing, and returns to Fiambalá along the same road. Since it's paved all the way, it's the easiest way to see the high Andes.
Good to know
- The road goes above 4,000 metres: take it slowly, drink plenty of water and avoid heavy meals. If you have heart or breathing conditions, check with your doctor first.
- It's cold and windy up there all year round: bring warm clothes even if it's hot in Fiambalá.
- There are no petrol stations along the way; leave with a full tank.
- In winter the road may close because of snow. Check the forecast before you go.
